Choosing the Right Rating Scale

This platform gives you a 1-5 rating and a 0-10 NPS scale as built-in question types, plus a slider for a continuous range and a matrix question for rating several items on the same scale at once. Here's when to reach for each.

1-5 rating

The default choice for general satisfaction questions. Five points is enough range to spot a neutral middle without overwhelming respondents with choices - use it for "how satisfied were you with X."

0-10 (NPS-style)

Reserve the 0-10 scale specifically for likelihood-to-recommend questions, where it lets you calculate an NPS score. Using a 0-10 scale for general satisfaction just adds unnecessary choice without adding insight.

Slider

Good for genuinely continuous concepts - "how many hours per week" or "what percentage of your time" - where forcing an answer into 5 discrete buckets would lose real information.

Matrix

Use when you're rating several distinct items (features, service aspects, product attributes) against the identical scale - it keeps the survey compact and makes the results directly comparable across items, but it does ask more of the respondent per screen, so keep the row count to 5-7 at most.

A rule of thumb

More scale points isn't automatically more precise - past about 7 points, most respondents can't reliably distinguish between adjacent options, so the extra granularity is often just noise.
